My eyelids slide up, and expose my pupils to the outer world. It is still dark, so I illuminate my surroundings with light from within.
I imprint myself on the outer world – every obstacle is given a meaning, every path is given a name. My inner light pours out knowing, scrubs away doubts, and creates an island of disillusionment where I can finally be safe.
I thought I had abandoned water forever, but it finds me again on the surface of the cave. It spreads in every direction and viciously defends me as I stand alone, on my island, in my cave.
All dreams too rotten to be considered good, all spirits too troubled to give me hope – they are all sucked into the ocean around me.
I do not feel helpless – I know I am saved. I am not a hostage, or a crazed shipwrecked soul – I am once again in control.
In silence, I observe the world as it wages its wars.
For now, I have nowhere to go.
